Even with our lowest laser power, Gravotech laser wood cutting machines can cut most non-dense woods, such as MDF or plywood. Higher power ranges are recommended for cutting thicker wood.

Maximum thicknesses will depend on the type of wood being cut and the laser power. For example, a 40W laser can cut 15mm plywood, or even more, depending on the type of wood.

Gravotech offers unique accessories ideal for Laser Wood and other plywood processing, such as honeycomb table quick clamps and clips.

CO2 laser technology for wood cutting

CO2 laser technology is precise and efficient for cutting wood using a focused laser beam capable of vaporising wood, resulting in clean and intricate cuts.

Advantages of wood laser cutting:

  • Precision: with a beam diameter of less than 0.1mm, laser wood cutting can achieve extremely detailed and intricate designs with high accuracy, even with thick woods, making it ideal for complex patterns, fine details, and lace-like designs.
  • Versatility: the same laser machine can cut and engrave wood at the same time, handling both tasks efficiently.
  • Non-contact process: the laser beam cuts without physically touching the wood, reducing the risk of material deformation.
  • Customisation: allows for personalised designs, rapid prototyping, and the creation of flexible shapes such as hinges and bends, making it perfect for custom projects, batch production, and innovative designs.

Our laser wood cutting tips :

To achieve the best results in laser wood cutting, keep these considerations in mind:

  • Edge appearance: a laser-cut edge will always have a burnt look. Use Gravostyle™ software to adjust the settings and reduce or enhance the dark appearance of the edge as needed.
  • Cutting table: always use a honeycomb cutting table, pin table, or laser cutting slats to support the wood and achieve more consistent results.
  • Cutting line and width: ensure a fine cutting line and utilise the cutting width correction feature in Gravostyle™ for precise dimensions.

Regular maintenance is essential to keep the equipment in optimal condition, including cleaning the optics to ensure clear performance, as laser wood cutting generates significant smoke. Using a nose cone can help protect the lens from dust and smoke, reducing the need for frequent cleaning and maintenance. Selecting the right laser lens is also crucial for achieving precise, high-quality cuts.

Proper ventilation and safety measures are required to handle fumes and prevent fire hazards.

CNC wood cutting

CNC wood cutting is an advanced method for efficient woodworking that allows for cutting through wood of varying densities and achieving bevelled edges.

Advantages of CNC wood cutting machines:

  • Efficiency: CNC machines operate independently once programmed, enhancing workflow efficiency in woodworking projects.
  • Safety: unlike laser cutting, CNC wood cutting poses no risk of fire or material blackening, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Operational economy: requires fewer consumables and does not necessitate air treatment.

A CNC wood cutter may leave clamp marks on workpieces due to the need to secure the wood during cutting. It also generates chips and dust, which require frequent vacuuming to maintain a clean workspace and ensure optimal machine performance.

The importance of the exhaust system for laser wood cutting

Laser tables use a laser beam to cut wood through a natural reaction. Our CO2 laser wood cutting machines directly vaporise the material, so no chemicals are needed or generated when processing natural types like solid wood. Laser wood cutting produces no chips, only smoke, gas, and dust, which can be safely managed with a fume exhaust system

However, some types of wood, such as plywood, composite, or OSB, release significant amounts of fumes, gas, and particles due to the adhesives used in their construction. The exhaust system is essential in filtering this smoke to maintain a healthy and odourless working environment.

Gravotech offers 3 sizes of extractors for wood cutting:

  • ES30 and LE140 are recommended for LS100 and LS100Ex laser tables,
  • LNI900 is suitable for the LS900 laser table.

Our fume exhausts benefit from high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, that remove harmful fumes and return clean air.

We highly recommend using a filter accessory alongside the fume exhaust to enhance efficiency and lower operational costs. This accessory significantly extends the lifespan of HEPA exhaust filters, ensuring cost-effective operation over time.
